ACCELERATED INDEXING SYSTEMS (AIS): Has Census Index Searches 1-8 on microfiche. It is the accumulated federal census indexes printed to 1983 and very early tax records. Complete to 1850 and partial 1860 - 1910. Search 8 has the index of the mortality census schedules for about half of the states.

FAMILY HISTORIES: Use the Card Catalog to find the surnames in the family histories in books that are in this library. There is also a collection of family histories in a file cabinet in the Map Area.

GAZETTEER CARD FILE: This file is at the entrance to the Map Room and it contains about 45,000 File Cards which has hard-to-find places in the U.S. where the name may have changed or the place may no longer exist. On CD "America, America".
GENEALOGY PROGRAMS: You may use the PAF or Personal Ancestral File programs on any of the computers to enter your genealogy information. You may also bring in a GEDCOM to convert to a submission to the Ancestral FILE.

INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL INDEX (IGI): A Salt Lake Family History Library (FHL) database that contains about 350,000,000 names on microfiche and the computers. The IGI contains Birth (Baptismal, Christening or actual Birth) and Marriage dates. Names are arranged alphabetically in the State or Country LOCALITY in which the event occurred. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS FAMILY HISTORY BOOKS: While this Library does not have most of these family history books you can look at the Library of Congress two blue, one red complement, two red supplement vols. call no. 016.9292 K128g for histories before 1961. You can obtain the exact title, author, publication date and publisher. Check the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) on MICROFILM for the book in the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake. If found there, you may order it at the Sales Desk. If it a book at the FHL and not on microform you may order copies of pages using a Family History Library form in the Sales Area called "Request for Photocopies-...Books...". If the book and not on microform and a book at the FHL, you may order a few pages using the Library of Congress order form in the Sales Area.
MAP AREA: Gazetteers, atlases and maps are here. There are many useful reference books and maps for various countries. Pick up the "Guide to UCLA" handout on a file cabinet in the Map Area.

NEWSPAPERS: American Newspapers/Union List of Newspapers, book, the best source for the old newspapers, call no. Ref 970 B33a. Gale Directory of Publications, a great source for the names and addresses of the current newspapers that are published, book, call no. 970 E4ay.
PEDIGREE RESOURCE FILE : More than 120 million names are now part of the newer Pedigree Resource File (PRF) in electronic form in the computers at this Center. It's a database of compiled pedigrees submitted by users via FamilySearch.com or gathered from printed family histories. A successor to the Ancestral File, PRF indexes individual records with events, parents, locations, contains notes, source documentation and submitter contact information.
PERSI: Is the PERiodical Source Index by Locality and Families done by the Allen County Library, books, call no. Ref 973 D25per and 1847-1985 on microfiche FHL #6,016,863. This Index is also on CD #49 in the Sales Area.
RED 3 RING SELF-HELP NOTEBOOKS: The Red 3 Ring Self-Help Notebooks Collection is to the right of the entrance to the film room in alphabetical order by title. The Self-Help Notebooks in this Collection have the compiled useful resources of this Center, other libraries and magazine articles. They also have Research and Class Papers written by the author and compiler of the Notebooks, Jon Schweitzer.
RESEARCH OUTLINE AND RESOURCE GUIDES: They are for sale in the Sales Area of this Center. The Research Outlines are more extensive than the Resource Guides. The Research Outlines and the Resource Guides give some of the best methods and resources for conducting your research in each state or country.
SURNAMES-RESEARCHERS: Genealogical Research Directories, annual publications, use the 1990 - 2001 editions, has the names and addresses of researchers around the world working on surnames, call no. 929.1025 G286grd.

CENSUS RECORDS: Actual census records are on microfilm for 1790 through 1920. Printed book indexes for most early states from 1790 through 1850; a few for 1860 and later. See the A.I.S. (microfiche) Index to census records mentioned above. The 1880, 1900, part of 1910 and 1920 censuses have Soundexes (Indexes) on microfilm. The 1880 Soundex only has families with children age 10 and under. Names are arranged on the Soundex rolls by Soundex Code Number and then alphabetically by given name. Some Indexes and records are on CD's in the Sales Area.

The LDS Church Census for 1940 is also alphabetical. The LDS Church Censuses for 1950, 1955, and 1960 are combined in alphabetical order. 3-generation and 4-generation Family Group Sheets arranged in alphabetical order by year in which they were filmed. There are indexes and lists for New York City and include indexes for the period 1820 through 1846, 1897-1902 and 1902-1943. Some of the actual passenger lists on film are here. Unfortunately, during the period 1847 through early 1897 there are no indexes for New York City.
There are indexes for Boston 1848-1920. Indexes for Philadelphia 1800-1948. Indexes for Baltimore 1833-1866 and 1920-1952.
See the passenger lists books and passenger lists in the 3 ring notebooks in the Passenger Book Area. The blue 3 ring notebook has "NEW YORK ARRIVALS 1820-1943". The blue 3 ring notebook "ATLANTIC AND GULF COAST PORTS" has many ports along the Atlantic seaboard, the Gulf Coast and the Great Lakes ports and are indexed for various short periods.
SUTRO LIBRARY CATALOG: Microfiche FHL #8,000,037 covers the genealogical holdings of the Sutro Library in San Francisco. Important because their genealogical materials and directories are available through public libraries on interlibrary loan.

These indexes/lists usually provide the name of the village from which the passenger leaving Hamburg had come. You need to start your search in the indexes by checking the time period when the person left the port of Hamburg, Germany. Obtain "The Hamburg Passenger Lists 1850-1934 Resource Guide" in the Sales Area.
